BURLEY – The world became a little less sunny on May 4, when Anthony Daniel Denton moved on to his next adventure.
Born on September 5, 1973, in Burley, he blessed the lives of Pamela Jo and Lanny James Denton. Daniel was the little brother to Gene and Mark, and the self-appointed lifelong bodyguard of his little sister, Angela.
Daniel was an old soul from the very beginning. Even as a boy, he worried about everyone around him, cared deeply, and somehow managed to make people laugh while doing it. Humble to his core, he would have gladly given a stranger the shirt off his back — probably with a joke attached. He was loyal, beautifully simple, endlessly caring, and firmly believed life was better with Metallica playing at full volume. He loved concerts, laughter, and finding humor in just about every situation. No matter what life handed him, Daniel could usually find a reason to grin through it.
He grew up living the kind of adventurous life that probably caused his mother at least a few gray hairs. Daniel befriended lizards, rode bicycles that evolved into dirt bikes, practiced karate, went jet skiing, arm wrestled anyone willing, and sparred with his brothers and nephews — even while sporting a broken neck, because apparently normal safety rules never really applied to him. To his family, Daniel earned the title “Grandpa Joe 2.0,” a nickname that perfectly captured his warmth, wisdom, dry humor, and giant heart. Along the way, he also collected an impressive list of nicknames: Two-Two, Dancerella Daniel, Danita Girl, Daniel Cocker Spaniel, and Danny Boy — each attached to a story that probably shouldn’t be told in public.
At 26 years old, Daniel was diagnosed with leukemia. He and his new bride, Mindy, were told the aggressive treatments would likely prevent them from having children. Daniel, however, never listened too well and God had other plans. Together they welcomed two sons, Jesse James and Mark Anthony, who became the absolute center of his universe. Being a father was Daniel’s greatest accomplishment and favorite adventure.
As a dad, Daniel taught his boys the important life skills: how to hunt lizards, climb rocks, wander railroad tracks on the way to swim in Leach Creek, and find adventure anywhere. His niece, Christa, and nephews, Raymond, Riley, and Damon, were usually not far behind. He taught Jesse and Mark how to laugh hard, love fiercely, protect the underdog, and be the kind of men who made others feel safe, seen, and valued. Colby and Wyatt also entered his life and quickly became family in every way that mattered.
Daniel’s world changed forever when he lost his beloved son, Jesse, and later his mother, Pamela Jo. Those losses left an ache in him that never fully healed. But even through heartbreak, Daniel continued loving fiercely — especially his son Mark, who remained his pride and joy. His brother, Gene (LaDonna) Cope, sister, Angela Oliver, nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, loyal friends, and countless others were better simply because Daniel had been part of their lives. In Daniel’s world, once he loved you, you were family — whether by blood or simply because life brought you into his circle.
To honor Daniel, sit down with the people you love. Have the real conversations about what you mean to each other. Have the hard conversations about mental health and self-care. Make peace with the wounds you carry. Check on your people. Love without condition and if you happen to hear Metallica playing a little too loud somewhere, there’s a good chance Daniel is nearby, watching you with a smile on his face and finally at peace.
Daniel’s Celebration of Life will be held from 2 until 6 p.m. Saturday, May 16, 2026, at The Dime Event Center, located at 215 W 13th Street, in Burley.
